A course in Love

Love is such an underused, overused, misused word. It is the subject for many poets, authors, artist from all genres. This could also be the topic of countless blog posts. For the past 20 or so years, my good friend Pat has been the teacher/host of a weekly 'love' class. Oh I know this sounds weird and conjurers up many unnecessary humorous thoughts. But, the class of about 50 gather once a week to hold discussion, support for one another, quite honestly I see them as little lights which must from the heavens be an illuminating beacon as they gather. Basically, the class opens with Pat reading an excerpt from Born for Love: Reflections on Loving, by Leo Buscaglia. A compilation of short essays, statements of thought on love; a beautiful little book. So inspired by this class and in connection to my thoughts of connectedness, I thought I'd have my own sort of sharing once a week here, on my blog, which, I guess, means that yes love is going to be the topic of (maybe not countless) several blog posts. Here's today's and if you feel a tug to comment, ask a question, whatever please feel free to do so right here or in a private message. Oh, here's one more thing, as I always say, "Joy is our purpose," Benjamin Disreli said, "We are all born for love. It is the principle of existence, and its only end." Wow, joy our purpose, love our existence, if we can spread this light of love, well can you only imagine how divine this human existence can be as we gather together on this beautiful little planet we all call home!

Love Has Nothing to do with Competition
page 27

It's unfortunate that so many of us are encouraged to develop a competitive spirit early in life because it so often works to the detriment of cooperative spirit necessary for love. The world becomes an arena of winners and losers, where character is shaped according to one's ability to survive, where winning is the only sign of success and where we are constantly measured against others to determine and validate our worth. Love is not a competitive sport. Winning in love comes through cooperation, compromise, and caring. when we become masters of these skills, everybody wins.

"We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and along these fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back as effects." Herman Melville

So beautiful! Would love love (yes) love to hear your thoughts!

I think this is a wonderful idea! With a world full of bias and oft times bad news, I'm excited for you for taking on this endeavor and look forward to each week! I love the image you created as well. It's wonderful that you're sharing a little love with all of us. :)

What a wonderful group! Having been raised in a competitive household where we were encouraged to do what we could to get to the "top"...I was conflicted as that just never felt right to me. I'm going to share this blog post with my kids :) Thanks Julia!

Its so true what you say that so much of what we do is informed by competition and that is so unfortunate. So thankful that that there are those who feel called to make love the focus instead. Bless you.
